After taking it easy the night before we got off to a good start Saturday morning. Picked up Travis about 10:30 am and made the 45 minute trek up to SafeCo. We parked for free about a half mile from the ballpark and got some of the last seats left, in the upper deck about half way down the left field line. The weather in the north west has been shining on us as we got another sunny mid-70s afternoon.
After a quick lap around the lower level we loaded up on some garlic fries and fried mushrooms and settled into our seats. The Mariners got a big game out of starter Gil Meche as he tossed a complete game 4 hitter that could have been something special if he hadn't surrendered a lead off bomb to Ray Durham (the 2nd we've seen out of him on the trip) in the 9th inning. The M's were paced by homers from Richie Sexson, Raul Ibanez, and Jeremy Reed. Barry Bonds played and managed a double down the left field line, but couldn't match his performance from the night before. For those keeping score, the home teams are now 2-3 in the games we've attended.
After the game we headed back to Gig Harbor where the Sand's were having a dinner party with the extended family. They graciously invited us to join, but we felt better about watching the College World Series than interrupting them.
The Highlight of the evening came as Casey's Dad Steve took Dan out in his Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo Cabriolet, followed by him letting me briefly cruise it around Gig Harbor. It's quite an experience being behind the wheel of such a machine, definitely something we'll never forget.
A big thanks to Steve and Mary Sand for putting us up for the last couple days. We couldn't have asked for better host, only one with less USC paraphernalia.
Gig Harbor lived up to all the hype.
Now it's time to rest up for tomorrow and the longest drive of the trip
